Instagram's chief, Adam Mosseri, has provided an updated overview of how Instagram's ranking algorithms work, shedding light on how content is prioritized in the main feed, Stories, and Reels.
Not since 2021 has Mosseri explained how Instagram's algorithmic ranking works. The aim is to be more transparent and dispel rumours about the platform's reach. Mosseri addressed some of the main concerns and explained Instagram's motivations for facilitating positive interactions.
As per Mosseri via Instagram blog:“We want to do a better job of explaining how Instagram works. There are a lot of misconceptions out there, and we recognize that we can do more to help people, especially creators, understand what we do. Today, we’re updating our original post to shed more light on how ranking works across Instagram and share some new features we’ve built in response to feedback from creators that help improve the experiences people have across the app overall.”
There was a lot to take in from the announcement, which you can read in full here, but we thought we would just summarise what we thought to be the key points to the information so you can adapt your Instagram strategy ASAP.
- Instagram doesn't have a singular algorithm overseeing the entire app but uses different algorithms for each part of the app, including the feed, Stories, Explore, Reels, and Search.
- The main feed considers recent posts from people you follow, as well as posts from accounts you don't follow but might be interested in based on various factors such as your activity and engagement.
- The main feed now includes AI-based recommendations, accounting for around 40% of the content shown, aiming to display relevant content based on user preferences.
- Instagram ranks the main feed based on factors like user activity, information about the post, information about the person who posted, and the user's history of interaction with someone.
- Reels are influenced by user activity, interaction history, information about the reel (e.g., audio track, visuals), and information about the person who posted. Watermarked or low-resolution Reels may receive less reach.
- Stories are ranked based on viewing history, engagement history, and the closeness of the relationship with the author. AI-based recommendations are not yet shown for Stories.
- The Explore page is based on overall popularity, user interaction with similar posts in the past, and previous engagement with the creator.
- Reels focusing on political issues may receive reduced reach as part of Meta's efforts to reduce division caused by political content.
- Shadowbanning, as a concept, is clarified by Mosseri, explaining that it's not a deliberate practice, but reach may be limited for violating guidelines or posting content against the rules.
So as we said, a lot to take in, but a very important read for anyone using organic Instagram as an important part of their strategy. We recommend going to read the full statement and becoming very, very familiar with this algorithm. Following Instagram’s guidelines could have a massive impact on your reach and therefore, see your growth rate speed up exponentially.
